The Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (Home for the Relief of Suffering) Hospital was born to support rare disease patients and their families and is a pioneering centre both in terms of equipment and clinical approach.
This hospital is one of the gifts bequeathed by Padre Pio. Padre Pio came to the San Giovanni Rotondo Hermitage in 1916; two years later received the stigmata and this event led in pilgrimage a large influx of patients seeking relief.
Direct contact with so many suffering people led Padre Pio to devise an hospital to heal people both in body and soul. In 1940 started to give form to his idea in collaboration with his “spiritual children”: Gulgielmo Sanguinetti, Mario Sanvico, Carlo Kisvarday, John Telferer, Ida Seitz, Angela Serritelli, Cleonice Moncaldi.
The structure, designed by Angelo Lupi and inaugurated the 5th of May 1956, originally had 250 beds and already included general medical and surgery ward, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, laboratories for clinical tests, orthopedics, clinics.
